Volunteer

Chastain Park has flourished, partly due the volunteerism of individuals, as well as school, church, scouting, business and other civic-minded groups. Numerous park improvement and maintenance projects are planned that need volunteers to get started.

CPC provides project coordinators, tools, gloves and work project assignments to match the size and capabilities of any volunteer group. You provide the manpower. Volunteer activities are "Plug and Play" events. You provide the people, or show up, and we provide all the instruction and tools you need to do the work.

Fall/Winter Projects

Essential tasks:

• Rake leaves
• Spread wood chips
• Remove graffiti
• Replenish playground mulch
• Maintain footpaths
• Trim branches
• Remove tripping hazards
• Replenish wood chips
• Maintain PATH

Physically challenging tasks:

• Clear brush to reclaim wooded areas (about 15 acres yet to go!)
• Removing Chinese privet, English ivy, kudzu, eleagnus
• Drag debris to a chipper
• Spread wood chips back along trails
  
  

Spring projects:

• Reverse Stream bank erosion
• Restore stream banks with plantings and natural materials
• Remove debris from the stream
• Remove fallen trees
• Restore and clean grills
• Stain wooden picnic tables, benches signage and swings
• Planting native varieties (e.g., ferns, azaleas, rhododendrons, mountain laurels, sweet shrubs)

Animal lover projects

• Build and install bird houses

Land Optimization

With the diversity of activities offered by its 18-hole golf course, riding stable, aquatic and tennis centers, youth sports complex and PATH, Chastain Park is the envy of many major U.S. cities. Yet many residents surveyed during the Master Planning process expressed a preference for adding more green space over the goal of creating additional scheduled or programmed activities. To that end, CPC is focused on optimizing non-developed and un-leased park acreage to significantly expand public areas.
